A weekend in Vermont

Mom and I don't get out much!  Yes we are on the road often to a hook-in here and there, but we don't really take much time off to just "live".  We were going to take some time in July to visit my sister in Vermont and go to one of our favorite flea market/antique shows, but we were just too busy preparing for shows and luckily my sister was too.....so she was not offended when we said we would plan a visit in October.  Let's face it, there are tougher things to do in life than visit Vermont in October.....yes, twist my arm.  So Friday afternoon we headed out and made the 5 hour drive to my sisters house.   It's always so nice to cross the border from New York into Vermont.  We cross the bridge in Rouses point over lake Champlain with the beautiful green mountains in full view.  Though I am very happily ensconced in upstate NY, it always feels very welcoming to go back to Vermont.  I haven't lived there since 1988 and though it is familiar it is also strange.  There really isn't anywhere like Vermont!  It's really an experience with its quaint back roads meandering from town to town.  And these little towns have the most fantastic little stores and shops.  One of my favorites is in "the islands", a cute little store with big meat filled sandwiches called "the john Adams", where you can also get a beautiful milk glass cow creamer and jars of bulk candy line the shelves.  It's just fabulous!

We came over this weekend to join my Sister in Danville as she sells some of her amazing folk art on Sunday.  We decided to visit a farmers market in Waitsfield and then drove over to Waterbury to do a bit more shopping.  If you ever get the chance to visit Vermont, take it, you will not be disappointed as I'm sure you'll see in the pictures below.

The Waitsfield farmers market, a visual cornucopia of colors and delicious smells.......

Oh the color....

....and more color......

....the best teriyaki sauce in the world.....

...making friends....dogs were welcome....

....even the bread is beautiful.....

Mom and Lisa in front of "the store"......

...inside "the store"....

This was the neatest little studio nestled in a corner of the woods, and look at that star!

...next up, lunch!

It was fried polenta with heirloom tomato relish.....delicious!

....and some pics from inside the restaurant....

Then it was on to Waterbury and the Cold Hollow Cider Mill.  I wish you could smell the Cider, homemade donuts and pies and maple everything!

Then it was time for pumpkins and look who we ran into...I suspect she knows we like wool!

What's in there mom?

Then it was back to my sisters house for a little wine and maybe some punch needle in a bit...if I feel like it.....yes, Mom and I don't get away much but when we do we do it right, but then of course you can't go wrong in Vermont!

Until next time.......

About Me

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my blog. I am married and just entering the second phase of my life as a Army retiree's wife. My husband and I did 25+ years in the Army. He is now officially a retired Colonel and has just entered the civilian workforce and I am happily settled in our 1830 Stone house. I (along with my Mom) operate www.theoldtatteredflag and currently we are building a small shop in the back part of the house. We live in Northern NY, right near the Canadian border. I have two handsome sons and 2 puggles. Life is busy for us, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
